The Rubbertramps in Central British Columbia

In the enormous Tweedsmuir Provincial Park there is really only one trailhead that can be reached by car. The Rainbow Range is certainly worthy of the time taken out from the long drive across the central highlands. You work your way up to a chain of lakes on a high plateau where you can see how the Rainbow Range came by its name.

While stopping to admire a pleasant stream, we were accosted by a male ptarmigan who came straight at us and got us to chase after him so that attention could be shifted away from his wife and eggs. He really put on a show for us complete with song and dance.

We camped at the outpost of Anahim Lake that evening and were treated to an unusually orange sunset. As we travelled the road the following day we realized what made the sunset so unique. The forest was burning around us. As we descended the smoke got thicker and thicker and really began to burn our eyes. When we hit the Chilikotin River the entire valley was nearly obscured by smoke. It was not until we reached the Fraser valley that we got a breath of fresh air...
