A short ferry ride from mainland Washington takes us from the cloudy coast to sunny Orcas Island where Mount Baker looms on the mainland horizon.We took another opportunity to do a bit more coastal exploring to look for the sea stars below the rocky bluffs where the mandrone trees grow. The next day the Camry took us up through giant red cedars to the start of our hike up through mature forest past the wildflowers to the summit of Mt. Washington with its striking views of the Cascades beyond the strait of San Juan de Fuca. The San Juan Islands were a pleasant respite for us, and we actually did see some orcas from the ferry but they were moving too fast for photos. But now were ready to move up to a bigger island... |
