The Rubbertramps Dance On A Volcano

Our most strenuous hike to date was a trip up South Sister, one of the Three Sisters in the chain of volcanoes of the southern Cascade range. We would our way up through green canyons past views of nearby Brokentop. until we reached the snow line where we could see our goal in the distance. Ever higher we trudged up the steep slopes through ever deeper snow until we finally reached the rocky crater rim where we could peer down into the icy emerald pool below. Althought we did not have enough time to hit the true summit, we could see well down the Cascade Range so we enjoyed a snack as we looked down on the summit of Mt. Batchellor.

We quicklly learned that decending the slopes could be accomplished with much greater style than the trudge up by using a mountaineering technique called glissading. Looks like fun, doesn't it? Wanna give it a try yourself?

The high and dry area near Bend is only a stone's throw from the lush Oregon coast. Since Bend is so doggone expensive, let's say we head for the shore next...
